The Sailors' Society provides a personal lifeline for seafarers on board and when they step ashore. Existing to enrich and enhance the well-being of seafarers in port through its Port Chaplains and centres, seafarers are offered practical help and wellfare, spiritual support and when in dire need, financial assistance and family liason. Our Port Chaplains visit thousands of ships during the year and are often the first to notice when all is not well on board. Reaching out to crew members of all ranks, without distinction for race, denomination, ethnic background or nationality, the Chaplains of the Sailors' Society offer a friendly presence, unconditionally greeting seafarers where they meet them. Working in a hundred ports and 30 countries the Chaplains regularly visit ships to dispense phone cards, news print from home, local knowledge, or transport to crews in nearby centres where facilities such as telephone and internet access are available.

My story

I was never a runner at school...or University...but during my time in London, I have seen the London marathon runners and been inspired, from the sidelines!

So now I have taken it upon myself to start pacing the streets of West London, get chased by dogs ("Flavia" in Kensington Gardens), reshape my feet with some sizeable blisters, eat lots of extra chocolate and not feel guilty, buy lycra and stay off the cider!

The reason for all of this is of course, for the Sailors. A charity which you might not have come across previously, but whilst not thrashing about in our great seas (and I hope swigging some rum), these guys face docking in highly mechanised environments. However, the Sailors' Society provides a lifeline to the seafarers once they step ashore.

Did you know, over 95% of the world's trade upon which we all depend is transported by sea however the seafareres are often forgotten.

So, please whip out your flexible friend and support this worthy charity and my marathon run!
