I'm Omar and I am about to do something which humans were definitely not built for....sky-diving...the very words, when broken down, scare me. A lot! But i agreed to do this to help my friends small, yet incredible, charity, Bottletop, so for now, im going to block it out!!
Let me give you some background on the charity so you can understand why Im doing this:
Five young people catch HIV every minute, teenage pregnancy is a leading cause of death amongst young women around the world through complications of childbirth and 80% of young men and women aged 15 - 24 don't know how HIV is transmitted. Broken down, this means that unsafe sex is now the second biggest risk factor leading to disability or death in the poorest communities. These are also not just 'developing world issues', and in the UK teenage pregnancy is back on the increase along with the HIV infection rate. Very worrying.
However, Bottletop tackle the problem by supporting small local projects which get the message accross in the right way to young people - not by lecturing - but through peer education, theatre, youth newspapers, music and other creative but informative methods, which actually mean something to young people. Bottletop have incredible programs for young people in Malawi, Rwanda, Brazil and here in the UK, which help them gain the life skills they need to avoid HIV/AIDS, other STD's, unplanned pregnancies and get on with their lives as we all want to.
