Story
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.
The work of The African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) is something quite close to my heart. 11 years ago when my 6 year old daughter Phaedra needed a bone marrow transplant the number of black people on the bone marrow donor register was paltry to say the least .Worse still was the attitude of many members of the community.
Thankfully, in large part because many involved in ACLT have worked above and beyond the call of duty and love, a awareness raising process was begun and is on-going. Daniel De-Gale the original inspiration behind Beverley and Orin's determined drive to change the staus quo, is growing into a fine young man with a future ahead of him.
The work of ACLT is to ensure that black representation on the UK bone marrow register is at a level that enures that any black man, woman or child with a bone marrow disease has the same chance of staying alive as their white counterpart. We've come a long way , but there's still a long way to go.
In July 2004,as part of my charity fundraising activities i'm going to be trekking on horseback through Gorkhi and Terelj National Park in Mongolia. ACLT is one 4 charities who, with your generous support, will benefit from my endeavours.
The trek is being marketed as the challenge of a lifetime. Please believe that for this 43 year old who to date has only had a dozen of so horse riding lessons 'challenge ' is gross understatement ! However, despite the tempation to phone the organisers and tell them to 'forget it', i remind myself that by completing the trek and supporting ACLT one more child doesn't have to die in hopelessness as Phaedra did.One more mother , one more father doesn't have to stand in utter despair as Phaedras' father and i did when it became abundantly clear that for our child, all was lost. Please give as much as you can afford and help the ACLT ensure that the right to and the fight for life by anyone of African Caribbean descent who needs a bone marrow transplant is as strong as anyone elses'. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. Many thanks for your support. Take care Ony
