Here's a bit more info:
Two mad Scottish “girls” need your help! We are aiming to raise £4000 for MAG, Mines Advisory Group. MAG is a neutral and impartial humanitarian organisation that clears the remnants of conflict zones and helps the communities affected. Our training starts in earnest on April 1st – April Fools Day! “Where fools rush in, angels fear to tread” the definition of which is “The rash or inexperienced will attempt things that wiser people are more cautious of!” This sums up the two of us! This 312km cycle ride through the Somme Valley amongst the major WW1 battlefields and monuments, finishing at The Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres takes place on 14th to 18th July 2010. This is going to be a real challenge for us. Chris Hoy, three times Olympic cycling champion is Scottish – cycling is in our Scottish blood. Unfortunately he was unavailable to oversee our training so we are not at the peak of fitness! Instead we will rely upon our determination and enthusiasm. Please donate and help to make our efforts worthwhile. Your details are secure and Just Giving will ensure that Gift Aid is reclaimed. The money donated is sent directly to the charity.
In the words of the late great Freddie Mercury “We want to ride our bicycles!" - (When we get one!!)
Many thanks from Maggie and Evelyn.
We will constantly be updating our page to let everyone know how our training is coming on.
10 May 2010 - Training was slow to start due to weather conditions in Scotland as was our fundraising. However as the better weather is here we have numerous fundraising events coming up which include a clay pigeon shoot, a bag pack, a barn dance and a 60's theme party and a race night. We are training slow but sure and have every confidence in ourselves! others may not!!! Will keep you posted soon!
Sunday 6 June 2010 - We are pleased to say that we raised £102 last night selling make a wish candles which people lit and placed in the pond at the music festival held at Kelburn country Centre where we both work. The evening was a great success and the candles were wonderful to see.
We also have a clay pigeon shoot/barbeque on today which is in aid of Mag International and we will keep you posted on this tomorrow. The weather is excellent here and it should be a good day.
Wednesday 16th June. Our clay pigeon shoot was excellent and the weather was great for us. Everyone who participated had a great day - and even managed to shoot some clays!
Tonight we are off to our weekly barbeque at Kelburn Stables jumping night and this is a steady weekly fund raiser for us.
The 60's theme party which we were having in August has now turned into a wedding. Maggie and her long suffering partner of 20 years have decided to make it legal and with a hippie, love and peace theme. Maggie has asked that no presents be given and that donations made on the day should go towards our fund raising. The ceremony is being held at Kelburn Estate where we work at the waterfall pool and afterwards an outdoor reception/party. Our fund raising will still continue once we have completed our cycle.
On 26th June we are having our ceilidh (a barn dance for those in England) and this should hopefully be nearer to completing our target. Again this looks to be a good night as the Scottish are renowned for their dancing and partying!!
Our training is progressing and we managed 44 miles on Monday and are hoping to do 55 on Thursday. Needless to say we pushed through the pain barrier and were finding ourselves a bit stiff in places the following day!
We will keep you updated and many thanks to all those who have donated and those who still have to.
Latest update from june 26th, and our ceilidh last night which was a great success and again everyone danced into the wee small hours, "this will set back our alcohol free training a few days", we managed to raise about £500,and again promoted the good cause of the charity.
29th June. Maggie and I went over to our training ground "Millport" and managed to cycle 67.5 miles on that day. We have found the people in Millport very friendly and would like to thank them for all their support and kindness - and this includes free icecream and water - I think they felt sorry for us! We are known over there as the Pink Ladies! due to our outfits.
Well we are nearly off on our journey and the cycling has been going good. We have packed plenty of padded knickers as we feel that our bums might just be a bit sore - but its for a good cause so we will put up with all the pain.
Once again many thanks to all those who have supported us. Will update you soon.
Love
Maggie and Evelyn
