Story
The Open Arms Village sits on 52 rural acres outside of Eldoret, Kenya. Loving family homes provide safety, an education and hope to an ever increasing number of children, all of whom have been orphaned, abandoned or suffered terrible neglect or abuse. Our aim is to continue building and ultimately provide homes for 170 children. To ensure its long term self-sustainability livestock are raised and crops are planted and harvested. In addition, the Open Arms Academy which is well recognised within the district offers places to children in the community.
The Open Arms feeding programme currently feeds 239 children that live in the Kambi Teso slum near Eldoret. For many this is their only meal of the day. Our staff members visit Kambi Teso, four days a week bringing hot and nutritious meals to children in need.
In tandem with our Kambi Teso feeding programme, Open Arms has developed a women's mentoring programme. This programme is designed to empower women to provide for their children as well as helping themselves to a better life. They may be mothers, grandmothers, aunts, or sisters, but all struggle with the realities of raising a large family, with little or no income. Most are unable to provide the basic necessities for their children.
Medical clinics have been an ongoing part of Open Arms’ outreach to the Eldoret community since our first visit there in 2002. Several times a year we hold medical and dental clinics where those in the area can receive the care they need but don't otherwise have access to. In Kenya, the vast majority of people can not get health care because of where they live or because they cannot afford it.
Generally our clinics are held in conjunction with our Outreach team visits. Setting up in big tents, we check blood pressure, pull abscessed teeth, treat common skin problems and stomach ailments, and dispense needed medications. We also counsel on good dental hygiene and nutrition, passing out hundreds of tooth brushes and children’s vitamin pills. More serious issues, like broken bones, are referred to the local hospital.
