Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I'm running to support The Jericho Foundation's project to help survivors of human trafficking.

What’s the issue?

Human trafficking is on the increase. In the UK, there are estimated to be between 10,000 and 13,000 people who are victims of human trafficking. Most are fleeing desperate situations in their own countries and have paid huge amounts in the false belief that they will be safe, independent and able to rebuild their lives. Instead, they find that they are victims of illicit criminal activities and are in slavery, working in intolerable conditions with no rights and no obvious exit.

The profile of people who have survived human trafficking is that they are generally capable, hardworking individuals who want to take responsibility for themselves and their families - they came to UK in order to work - but they have been sold a lie and they are now being abused and exploited.  Often they cannot go home as the risk of further exploitation is high.

Last year, in the UK there were 2340 individuals ‘rescued’ from human trafficking. These ‘survivors’ are moved to a safe house where they can stay for 45 days during which time they can access benefits and are expected to find alternative work. All government support ends after day 45 unless they have work. Clearly, survivors of human trafficking need support to recover from their traumatic experiences, gain the language skills and get the work experience necessary to get a job. In the absence of this, most survivors find themselves homeless and destitute, vulnerable to engaging in criminal behavior, substance abuse or being re-trafficked and sucked back into exploitation again.

I am fundraising for a project to provide total wraparound support to help the survivors of human trafficking obtain and sustain paid employment so they be economically independent.

The Jericho Foundation has over 20 years of expertise in supporting vulnerable people to get jobs. It needs funding to run a programme in Birmingham working with 24 survivors over a period of 2 years.  Your money will help cover the wraparound support to enable them to gain paid work experience and employability in Jericho's social enterprises as first step towards obtaining sustainable employment elsewhere. Jericho’s programme will provide English language input, 'on the job' training and an individually tailored package of personal development support.
