Story
I will be running 100km across May in order to raise money for Addisons Disease.
As some of you may know, my girlfriend’s nephew, Bobby, was diagnosed with Addison’s disease in December 2023. Addison’s disease is a rare endocrine condition that affects the adrenal gland function and can be fatal. This means Bobby must take lifelong medication several times a day to replace these hormones and have emergency doses if needed to avoid an adrenal crisis. As this is such a rare disease, particularly amongst children, the Addison’s Disease Self-Help Group has helped our family to understand the disease and support Bobby.
- 1 in 10,000 people in the Uk are affected by Addison’s.
- 8% of patients will experience an adrenal crisis yearly.
- An adrenal crisis is 10 times deadlier than a diabetic coma, with 1 in 200 being fatal.
At the Addison’s Disease Self-Help Group (ADSHG) they support everyone affected by Addison’s disease and adrenal insufficiency.
They work to:
- support our community and their healthcare providers
- enhance better medical understanding
- promote effective management
- fund vital research
Thank you for taking the time to read this and if you can, we kindly ask that you donate even a small amount as it would make a huge difference to this small charity and help to raise awareness about the disease.
