Diabetes UK is the charity leading the fight against the UK's devastating and fastest growing health crisis, working to create a world where diabetes can do no harm. It’s a fight that involves all of us – sharing knowledge and taking diabetes on together. Join us.

Story

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 30 years ago. I wanted to do a personal challenge to celebrate making it this far. The Bob Graham Round is a route around the Lake District taking in 42 peaks. I will do a clockwise route and then turn around and try to do it again anti-clockwise in under 48 hours. This will be 84 peaks in total with 206km of distance and 15400m of vertical ascent over rough ground. I might not make it, that's why it is such a challenge BUT I have a great team around me and with your support I'll push as hard as I can.

This challenge is to show that Type 1 should not hold us back. Yes, Type 1s have a lot more to think about and control when we exercise but we should never let this stop us. Control the diabetes, don't let it control you. #nolimits

I want to support and raise money for Diabetes UK. The advances in Type 1 Diabetes management in my lifetime have been incredible. I remember using urine test steps to measure my sugar and only injecting twice a day. Now I have a glucose sensor in my arm next to an insulin pump that gives me insulin. These are controlled by an app called a Loop on my phone that helps me balance my sugars whether I'm working, exercising or asleep. Currently there are medical trials where specially modified insulin producing islet cells are injected into Type 1s without the need for immunosuppression. The truth has been rubbing for a year and many of these Type 1s are still not needing any insulin injections. A cure is near! Please support this challenge and Diabetes UK for all the support they offer people with all types of diabetes around the UK.
