Story
Fundraising for Neonatal Simulation Training – Dudley Group NHS Charity
My name is Claire, and I am an Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner working on the neonatal unit at Russells Hall Hospital. I have been part of the NHS for 25 years, with around 20 of those years spent caring for babies and families on the neonatal unit.
Alongside my full-time role, I am also a mum of three, a musician in three community bands, and someone who enjoys keeping fit. I have also recently taken on a master’s level leadership apprenticeship, as I am passionate about continually improving neonatal care and team development.
A key part of my role is delivering neonatal simulation training, which is essential for maintaining clinical skills, confidence, teamwork and most importantly patient safety. Simulation training allows the neonatal team to practise managing rare but critical emergency situations in a safe environment, so that when the unexpected happens in real life, we are prepared.
Think of it like a pilot using a flight simulator before flying a real plane.
I have been delivering simulation training since 2011, but we are still using the same term-sized training doll, which is now outdated and no longer ideal for modern neonatal education. However new simulation mannequins are costly, and the department could benefit from the advanced technology.
My challenge
On 16th May 2026, I will be taking on a huge personal challenge my first ever bodybuilding competition at the age of 55. This is something I have always wanted to do but never had the confidence to try. I’ve decided it’s now or never, and I’m going for it!
I am using this challenge to raise funds to help purchase a new neonatal simulation doll, which will directly support the training of staff and improve the care we provide to our tiniest patients.
I will be sharing my training journey and progress for anyone who’s interested via Instagram, and every donation, big or small will make a real difference.
What your donation will do
Every donation will go towards the purchase of a modern neonatal simulation doll, helping us to safely train staff for emergency situations and improve care for our smallest and most vulnerable patients. Any donation however small will help.
Every pound raised brings us closer to providing the best possible training environment for neonatal staff and the best possible care for babies and their families. If the cost of the simulation equipment is not reached any donations will benefit the babies and families for other needed equipment.
I am documenting my preparation and progress here if any one is interested in following me. Please click on this link.
Thank you
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story and for supporting the Dudley Group NHS Charity. Your generosity will help ensure neonatal staff are confident, skilled, and ready to provide the very best care when it matters most.
