Story
One of the most important figures in British history is Alan Turing. He was a phenomenal mind who made exceptional contributions to cracking the Enigma machine in WWII and pioneered such technology that has led to our modern day understanding of computers, through his unprecedented mathematical skills.
He was also a homosexual man who was vilified, arrested and humiliated simply for his sexual orientation, which ultimately led to his suicide. One of the greatest minds of the last 100 years, attacked for simply being who he was - because in Britain in the middle of the 20th century, it was illegal to be openly gay in society.
One of the lesser known facts is he was a phenomenal runner! In fact, it is recorded in biographies of his that he often ran the journey from Bletchley Park to Downing Street to converse and update Winston Churchill on the ongoing work cracking the illusive code.
On the 21st June 2026, I plan to honor that man and raise awareness for the sensational LGBT Foundation, based in Manchester where he once resided, by running those very steps from Bletchley to London as best as I can. This will start at Bletchley and with any luck, finish as close to 10 Downing Street as I can get.
But I cannot do it alone. This is a journey I have wanted to try for a few years but I will be unsupported on this ultramarathon and nothing pushes us along like knowing we are making a difference! So here is a fundraiser for this event in honour of our wonderful friends at the LGBT Foundation:
They are a national charity with LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing at the heart of everything we do. They also celebrate and empower LGBTQ+ individuals and our diverse communities to realise their full potential, every day.
They provide services and activities that give a lifeline to those in need, offering hope and support on their journey towards achieving their aspirations.
Their vision - one I deeply share in - is a world where Queer liberation enables meaningful and lasting change and plays a vital part in a more equal and just society.
To help drive this, I will also be running the ABP Newport Marathon 2026 for this charity as well, flying their colours on the run, in hopes of a PB trying to raise awareness of the charity!
