140.6 Miles, a father and son, swim cycle and run, in memory of my Grandma

In memory of Christine Finlay

An unofficial ironman distance triathlon

Motor Neurone Disease moves fast. It takes away time, it takes away independence and it has no cure. Every day we support people affected by MND. We fund ground-breaking research. We campaign for better care. We’re here for everyone who needs us. Because with MND, every day matters.

Story

Two Generations. One Promise. 140.6 Miles for MND and my Grandma

In 2024, I lost my Grandma to Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

As a family we watched Grandma gradually lose her ability to move, speak and live independently. MND is relentless. There is no cure, and every next day is a bit worse than the one before.

So in the summer of 2026, me (17) and my dad, Alec (56), will attempt something most people will never do, or ever want to do!

An unofficial Ironman-distance triathlon.

The challenge on the 15th of August:

- 2.4 mile lake swim

- 112 mile of cycling

- 26.2 mile marathon

That’s 140.6 miles in one day.

As I will be 17, we can’t enter an official event. That means no race infrastructure and no cheering crowds to carry us along. Just the two of us pushing through it together, and Gill (Mum) in the support van.

Some might say I'm too young, but I believe solid preparation, courage and commitment matter more than playing it safe. With professional training support, I'm taking on a considerable training commitment whilst undertaking my first year of A levels.

We’re doing this because we’ve seen what MND does to its victims and the heartache and challenges it brings to the families and friends that support and love those afflicted by it.

Your support through donations will not just make a difference to lives of those impacted by MND, it will also serve as a great source of motivation and inspiration for me and my Dad to complete one of the most toughest physical events.

Please give here on this page.

One final extra request, if you are willing, we would be so grateful if you could share our challenge and goal with your LinkedIn, Facebook, TicToc or other social platforms.

Our deepest gratitude for your support

Jake & Alec
