Bowel Cancer Awareness

36 hours Non Stop Cycling.. Target 400 Miles+ · 30 May 2025
This year I'm cycling non stop for 36 hours my target is 400 miles, round my usual 20 mile circular route. I'm turning my wheels not only for a local man and friend Bruce McMyn but everyone in our area going through bowel cancer. All the monies we raise will go to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary Oncology unit DGRI.
Bruce has very kindly written a few words below about his experience with bowel cancer.
Ian Baird has kindly asked me to choose a charity for his cycle challenge this year.
I would like to start by thanking Ian for all he has done for cancer charities over the years.
This year I would like to raise money to support those with bowel cancer through donating to the DGRI Oncology unit.
I would like just to say a few words from my experience with bowel cancer and heighten awareness, especially among people who think they’re ‘too young’ to get it.
At 50 we should all get a stool sample to fill and return (you can request one if you aren’t automatically sent one).
Don’t put it in the drawer and forget about it!!
Its not difficult and once done, that’s it for a few years.
I was only 47 when I thought my bowels weren’t performing right. You know yourself when this happens. You can only blame beer, chocolate or rich food for so long!!
So, after a visit to the Doc’s. I was referred to DGRI within a week and I was in for my operation within a fortnight. SO QUICK. We are SO lucky with our local facilities at DGRI .
The tests came back 4C (stage 4 Cancer) which was alarming to say the least.
The follow up Chemotherapy was not easy, but with all the help from the Oncology Nurses and Doctors who were excellent, it was all very smooth and informative.
The side affects of the Chemotherapy still affect me today 10 years later.
At this point I’d like to thank the Shebburn Surgery and the Oncology unit in Dumfries for their fast action. They have been there for me right through with further tests, reassurance and on the end of a phone whenever I needed through my journey back to health, and a cancer free diagnosis.
Also, family, friends and neighbours especially Kara, Stuart and Kerry for all you did for me in a time of need.
SO PLEASE DO THE TEST !!!!
