40-Mile Virtual Bike Ride from Childswickham to St Richard’s

St Richard’s Hospice is an independent charity offering free, expert care for adults with an illness that cannot be cured, and support for their loved ones and carers. Each year the hospice team supports more than 3,000 patients, family members and bereaved people in Worcestershire.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving.

At nearly 93-years-old I will be undertaking a charity cycle journey from Childswickham via Redditch Hospital to St Richard’s Hospice in Worcestershire, some 40-miles. Over the next month as part of my personal recovery from a stroke I suffered in January and part of my daily physio I will use my sit down cycle exerciser to take the virtual ride. It may take me a few weeks doing a few miles each day but this is more importantly about fundraising for St Richard’s Hospice as a thank you for looking after Kate, my true love and wife of 72-years before she passed away in the peaceful setting of the St Richard’s Hospice and cared for by its staff, with me and our 4-boys at her bedside.

My wife Kate was diagnosed with mesothelioma at Redditch Hospital in late 2024 before passing away on 2 April 2025 peacefully in the care of the staff at St Richard’s Hospice. Not only in Kate’s final few days but also since through the support of the St Richard’s Family Support Team the hospice has provided outstanding support for me too.

Kate and I met when we were both in the Royal Air Force and were married soon after. I was in the RAF Police whose nickname is the ‘Snowdrop’s’ so it is even more fitting that my 40-mile cycle ride is for St Richard’s whose logo is also the ‘Snowdrop’. Where you can, please donate to my fundraiser and help St Richard’s provide the care and support for the patients and families in the future as they did for Kate and they continue to do for me.
