Charity Gala · 1 November 2025

When an adult or child has been diagnosed with a complex or incurable condition, Havens Hospices can provide the care they need, ‘Making every day count’. Our specialist Care Teams can support them in the comfort of their own home and through our hospices, Fair Havens and Little Havens.

Story

Whether you knew Bex or not, I hope you’ll join us for an evening of black tie elegance, a three-course meal, auction, raffles, and meaningful connection—all in support of Havens Hospices. This gala is in memory of my best friend, but also for every family who walks through the doors at Havens Hospices for a place where love, dignity, and peace are at the heart of everything.

If you’re unable to attend but would like to donate, please use the JustGiving link. The page will remain open up to and during the event.

In June 2023, my best friend Bex was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. She tried multiple treatments and chemotherapy—not expecting a cure, but to spend more time with her beautiful son, Zuberi. When treatment was no longer an option, Bex spent the time she had left as fully and peacefully as possible.

Fair Havens played a huge role in giving her that gift.

Before entering the end-of-life stage, Bex attended creative therapy sessions in the Fair Havens Hub and lovingly created memory boxes for her son. The last eight months of her life were chaotic—full of hospital admissions and noise she never wanted. Bex had always said that when the time came, she wanted to be at Fair Havens, so we, her family, could stop being carers and simply be with her.

The day we arrived, two nurses were waiting outside with a wheelchair and oxygen. We entered a calm, welcoming room where tea and cake were waiting—Bex looked around and felt at home. That moment will stay with me forever.

Bex was a force of nature—bright and bold. She lit up every room and made everyone feel seen and welcome. She always called me her sunshine—but if you knew her, you’d know she was the one who shone brightest. Her light warmed every space, every moment and every memory.

Losing her has left a hole in my life, but organising this gala in her honour has helped me navigate grief with purpose.

Fair Havens gave Bex more than just medical care—they gave her music, cake, jigsaws, laughter, movie nights, and the dignity of being herself to the very end. They even arranged a 2nd birthday party in their lounge, complete with balloons, cake, food, and soft play so her family could make beautiful memories to share with Zuberi one day.

As a nurse at Little Havens, I’ve always known how vital end-of-life care is. But being on the other side—as a friend and family—has deepened that understanding. It’s not just about comfort or medicine. It’s about honouring life and making space for laughter, love, and memories, right to the very last breath.

Little Havens also gives me the privilege of spending time a family member, who also accesses the hospice. Whether it's enjoying the swimming pool or the beautiful gardens, these moments allow us to create peaceful and meaningful memories together.

Havens Hospices doesn’t change the diagnosis—but it gives people the most precious gift of all: time, peace, and comfort.

Thank you for helping me honour my best friend and for supporting the extraordinary care that Havens Hospices gives.

With love and gratitude,

Lucy
