Story
Most of us take our eyesight for granted.
Our eyes are responsible for roughly 80% of the information we absorb. When we lose our vision, even simple things become much harder.
My story
Because of several chronic health problems, my partner Jenny has had 18 eye procedures in just over two years. Sadly, there’s a good chance she will lose sight in her left eye one day.
I have personally seen how hard it is for a person to go through so many operations and face losing their sight before turning 35. I also know how helpless it feels to watch it happen to someone you love.
That’s why I want to help support the people doing important research to help those with sight loss.
Why I chose Gift of Sight
First, it had to be a charity that was focused on helping people like Jenny who are losing their vision. Secondly, I wanted to make sure that any money I raise is put to good use and makes a difference.
Jenny works with some of Gift of Sight’s top researchers at Southampton Hospital. She’s seen for herself how amazing their work is and how much they rely on funding to keep going, save people’s sight, and improve lives.
Even though their current research isn’t focused on Jenny’s condition, Gift of Sight funds vital equipment for the eye unit at Southampton Hospital that her doctors use to treat her and others.
How I’m raising money
Jenny and others like her face physical and mental challenges that come with losing their sight. That’s why I wanted to take on something that would push me physically and mentally, and I found it—the David Goggins 4x4x48 challenge.
Starting Friday, 15th May 2026, I’ll run 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours, finishing late Sunday afternoon or early evening on the 17th.
My goal is to raise £4,818. This isn’t a random number—it stands for the 48 miles I’ll run in two days and the 18 eye procedures Jenny has had so far.
While this running challenge will be hard, losing your sight is even harder. Please support me and the amazing work Gift of Sight is doing.
