Paul's fundraiser for Bowel Cancer UK

Paul Burgess is raising money for Bowel Cancer UK
In memory of Brian Smith

Naples Half Marathon · 18 October 2026

We’re the UK’s leading bowel cancer charity. We’re determined to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer. Our vision is a future where nobody dies of the disease.

Story

I knew Brian for 10 years. Working up in Lockerbie I stayed at his hotel, Somerton on every visit. Brian was a fantastic, charismatic front of house man and would move around the hotel/dining room chatting to all, making everyone laugh and always with a word for everyone.

Brian loved football and Rangers. We had endless chats around our football teams and over time got to know him, and the rest of the family who run Somerton.

Brian battled with cancer for near 3 years and over this time tried every form of chemo, ops and treatment to battle with it. He did this with amazing fortitude and i never once heard him complain about his lot. His approach and attitude I think is a lesson to us all and puts our own daily worries into sharp perspective.

Along with endless football chat, my best memory with Brian was when I invited him in April 2025 to the Liverpool-Everton derby game at Anfield. We were chasing the title and won 1-0 with a late goal from Diogo Jota. Brian enjoyed the atmosphere and occasion and it was great to spend time with him.

After a tireless struggle Brian passed away just a few hours after his 50th birthday party surrounded by his family.

I am running Naples half marathon in Brians memory and to raise money for a brilliant person and cause.

Any support or help you can offer would be greatly appreciated
