Wing walk · 4 July 2025

The Royal Hospital Chelsea provides a fitting home to veteran soldiers, fondly known as the Chelsea Pensioners. The Hospital is a place where veterans find comradeship and receive the very highest standards of care.

Story

My wing walk took place at Sywell Aerodrome on the 4th of July as promised!

I am so proud of everyone who supported me and the Royal Hospital will be too. You are all wonderful.

And a poem I've composed below!

The weather is stunning, at Sywell, Northamptonshire.

July twenty-fourth I did a wing walk, up in the atmosphere.

There I stand with limbs a-shaking.

Waiting for the Pilot's briefing.

Now I’m ready, with mind so clear.

Trying to show, I have no fear.

When the briefing is all done.

That is the time to have some fun.

From my head, hearing aids are removed.

Making the noise of the engine, much improved.

Climbing on the biplane’s wing and standing there.

Doing this to raise money for a dare.

To a flimsy harness, they strap me in.

Now I’m committed to my Wing Walk spin.

The engine starts, propellor turns.

Now I must my money earn.

I know not what, awaits me now.

So I sign a cross, upon my brow.

We slowly go to the take-off point.

I hope this flight, won’t disappoint.

Then taxiing forth, to take-off speed.

Wheels a-spinning, from the field we leave.

Banking right, into the clear blue sky.

On my pilot’s experience, I must rely.

Banking, diving, rolling, as I stand there.

Quickly and quietly, I say a prayer.

One hundred and twenty miles an hour we go.

For an eighty year old plane that is not slow.

The wind is gusting and the plane is shaking.

My cheeks are distorted, as we start diving.

Turning left and I’m parallel to the ground.

Now I hope my bravery will astound.

I wave to the people down below.

Hoping their admiration will quickly grow.

Do they care for me at all.

Or are they waiting for a fall.

It is quite exhilarating, so I give a shout.

Arms still waving as we come about.

Loop-the-loop for this flight is forbidden.

And for Barrel-roll, I must my experience widen.

One last turn and we touch down.

Even my underwear is not brown.

Then all too quickly, the flight is done.

Getting a reception, that is second to none.

My sponsorship total, is not yet known.

When you read this, it will have grown.
