Marie Curie provides care and support for people living with any terminal illness across the UK. Our nurses work night and day in people’s homes and our hospices offer specialist care. We also support people emotionally, provide practical information, and match them with trained volunteers.

Story

Tony died just 3 days after his 92nd birthday. A much loved husband, father, grand father and great grand father. He was born in Sheffield and, growing up during WW2, developed an interest in aircraft and thus a decision to follow a career in flying. After a brush with juvenile courts, he was not considered acceptable by the RAF, but the RN welcomed him. At 17, he therefore started on his career in the Fleet Air Arm as an observer. After 12years service, mainly in anti-submarine all-weather fighter squadrons, he left the RN to have two years in civilian life as an Estate Agent/Builder. He then made a return to flying, now in the RAF, starting as a navigator in a Canberra Strike Squadron. When his flying career ended, he became a Photographic Interpreter, which suited him as he had also been a photographic officer in the RN. With a growing interest in intelligence, he decided to leave the RAF to enter the world of Defence Intelligence, where he remained until his retirement from fulltime work. Tony always showed great enthusiasm for all the roles in his working life. In his remaining years, he developed a passion for walking – long distance paths in UK and mountainous trecks in every continent, plus a bungee or two. He was also interested in astronomy, helping to fuel an interest in others. The local pub has always been his place of relaxation, enjoying chats with the locals until the last week of his life.
