Access Adventures is a registered charity delivering life-changing adaptive adventure sports. Our services are designed to challenge expectations and increase confidence for people with disabilities. The adaptive sports include waterskiing, wakeboarding, skiing, kiting, biking and paddlesports.

Story

On 8th May I will be setting off on a 270 miles, 4 day handcycling challenge from London to Amsterdam. It hasn’t been easy to fit the training between work, family and life but it’s go time.

21 years since my injury

21 years ago on 22nd March 2004, I was in a ski accident while on my university ski trip which changed my life for ever. Aged 21 at the time I’ve officially lived half my life with a spinal cord injury.

It’s a big milestone. In these last 21 years I have been incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by amazing friends, family and extraordinary community who have supported me every step of the way.

I have achieved far more than I ever thought possible while sat in my hospital bed having just been told I will never walk again. I have skied around the world, competed at the Vancouver Paralympics, competed at the World Disabled Waterski World Championship, taken part in the London Marathon and other challenges, leaned to kite surf and surf, cycle and embrace the sports I love. Most importantly, I have the most incredible and supportive wife and we are blessed with three beautiful girls.

Access Adventures 10th Anniversary

This year also marks the 10th Anniversary of Access Adventures. 10 years ago, Jane, Clare and I co-founded Access Adventures. We all had personal experience and had seen first hand the incredible life changing benefits adaptive adventure sports can have on people with disabilities. We have come a long way, from supporting 39 people in our first year to almost 500 people a year. There have been so many great memories and stories and life changing impact on people. We remain as passionate as ever to keep providing more opportunities, but it continues to be hard to raise the funds to meet the need and create more adventures for years to come.

The money raised will go a long way to supporting Access Adventures create new life changing opportunities through adaptive adventure sports.

In memory of my Dad

I'm also cycling to Amsterdam in memory of my father who we sadly lost to cancer in 2023. He was proud of his Dutch heritage with his mother being Dutch and I know he would have been at the finish line to share some poffertjes and a cool larger.

This Challenge will hurt so any support you can offer will mean the world to me and help get to the finish.
