Story
UNICEF, along with other UN agencies, has stepped up the response in Pakistan as floods are affecting over 3 million people, including 1.5 million children. Hundreds have died, and most of the stricken areas are cut off, thus limiting access and relief efforts.
The floods have caused major damage to roads, bridges, schools, homes, sanitation and drinking water facilities. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), the worst affected province, the Provincial Government now puts the death toll at 1,400 people, with more than 100 people still missing. The actual figures could be higher.
Search and rescue is the current priority, but authorities have also requested help with emergency shelter and food, as well as drinking water and sanitation facilities.
UNICEF's response
UNICEF is appealing for £6.6 million to help meet the needs of children in Pakistan.
Working with partners, we have set up 24 medical camps in the affected areas, where we are providing medicines, water treatment tablets and jerry cans, benefiting around 1 million people.
We are also supporting the local authorities in providing clean drinking water, both by repairing wells and by providing water tankers. We are also distributing energy biscuits and hygiene packs.
