Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

I will be taking part in the 5km Women's Challenge in Hyde Park on Sunday 4th September. The aim of all this exercise (my part) is to raise funds (your part) for the Pituitary Foundation. This is to help with their work on Diabetes Insipidus and other pituitary disorders.

Diabetes insipidus (DI) is a rare disorder in which your kidneys are unable to retain water. This results in the production of large volumes of urine which in turn makes you feel dry and very thirsty. It is very important to point out that DI is not related to the type of diabetes most people have heard of, diabetes mellitus. In DI, there is no problem with the sugar in the blood or urine. The problem either concerns the lack of a water-retaining hormone or chemical in the blood (called vasopressin; sometimes anti-diuretic hormone) or is sometimes due to an abnormality in the kidneys which prevents them from responding to this hormone. The hormone itself is normally secreted by the pituitary gland, which is located at the base of the brain, just behind the bridge of the nose. Most DI is caused by inadequate secretion of vasopressin by the pituitary gland. This can happen in varying degrees.

My family has been affected by this disorder. The support of the foundation in dealing with this has been invaluable and reduced the burden of lack of information for the sufferer and the GP. Having someone to talk to, help direct enquiries and provide support has helped imensely.

The toilet card is one of the many benefits the Pituitary Foundation provide for Diabetes Insipidus sufferers! For more information on causes and treatment of DI and how the foundation helps please visit www.pituitary.org.uk. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The Pituitary Foundation will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. If you do not live in the UK, please don't let that stop you we need your money. So please sponsor me now! Please forward this to all the generous folk you know. Many thanks for your support.
