Story

So what's this Marathon Challenge all about then? As most of you know I'm Gordon Wainwright and I'm Headteacher  of Sion Hill Middle School in Kidderminster and Pete Hodgetts is my site manager. Sion Hill is closing next year and we wanted to do something special to mark the event. Both Pete and I need to shed a fair bit of weight so we thought we would set ourselves a challenge and raise some money for charity at the same time as losing some weight and getting fit. In the past Sion Hill Middle School has raised many thousands of pounds for a number of charities including  Whizz Kidz,Cancer Research, Macmillan Cancer Relief, Children with Leukemia and The Stroke Association.

Our marathon challenge will culminate in The London Marathon next year and we have put together our programme for the year which will now include 5 Marathons. We have registered for the Arctic Circle Marathon on 1st July, the Berlin Marathon in September , the Lisbon Marathon in December, the Barcelona Marathon in March (this is the one we have added to our original programme as we thought the gap between December and April was rather a long one!) and have been given charity places in next year's London Marathon.

This time we wanted to concentrate specifically on children's charities so we are supporting 2 charities, Dreams Come True, details of which you will  find elsewhere on this page and Wellchild, details of which you can find at www.justgiving.com/pandgwellchild  .

We have set ourselves a target of £6000 to be split equally between the 2 charities. We have also set ourselves a target of losing 3 stone each. That's about it really. So please help to reach our targets which we think are realistic but challenging!! If you would prefer your pledge/donation to go to Dreams Come True please donate on this page. If you would prefer to donate to  Wellchild please go to www.justgiving.com/pandgwellchild

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor us online.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: WellChild  and Dreams Come True will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor us now!

Many thanks for your support.

OUR PROGRAMME OF MARATHONS

24th September, 2006 - Berlin Marathon - Completed in 6 hours, 36 minutes and 48 seconds (and 27 degrees of heat!!)

3rd December, 2006 - Lisbon Marathon -  Only half -marathon completed due to injury and organisers sending us the wrong way!!!

4th March, 2007 - Barcelona Marathon -Sadly Gordon ran out of time (there was a 6 hour  course limit) , but recorded a personal best half-marathon of 2 hours 53 minutes.  Pete just got there in time and recorded a personal best marathon time of 5 hours 56 minutes, beating his previous best by a full 40 minutes!. Well done Pete!! Sadly Gordon also had his wallet stolen on the evening of the marathon!

22nd April, 2007 - London Marathon. Well, despite the heat and despite setting out from different starts, we both finished within 5 minutes of each other!! Gordon finished in 6h 33m 31s and Pete finished in 6h 28m 28s. The boys done good. What an amazing experience!! Hats of to the people of London, who were absolutely magnificent!!!
