Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I have always wanted to run a marathon and back in September this seemed like a 'manageable' challenge. However, now, with less than seven weeks til race day, it is safe to say that this will be no easy feat.
As a former pupil of Peebles High School and a Dental Student at the University of Glasgow, I cannot think of a more appropriate charity to partly represent in April when I run the Paris Marathon 2014.
Oral cancer is one of the lesser known cancers, however the number of cases has been on the increase in recent years. The Ben Walton Trust, set up to commerate Ben Walton, was established in 1996. Please take a look at the website http://www.benwaltontrust.org/index.html to find out more about the Trust.
Early detection of potentially cancerous lesions is vital with regards to the survival rate, currently less than 50% over a five year period. I am running the marathon to raise awareness of both the Ben Walton Trust and vigilance towards Mouth Cancer. Ben, a student at Aberdeen University, was only 22 when he died. Please read his story, and aim to raise awareness among your peers. Together, funding and research can aid education and raise awareness of Mouth Cancer.
If you choose to support this cause, please leave me a comment with a song that I can put on my iPod for the race (preferably something with a beat) - there is no way that I can think of four hours worth of music on my own! It would be good to have a constant reminder of those who are supporting the charity on my way round the course.
Take a minute to look at the other news and events of the Ben Walton Trust http://www.benwaltontrust.org/news_and_events.html
All support is much appreciated,
Thanks,
Rachel
