Story

This year we have decided to include a company team building event with a difference… we are going to run an event for a charity. This will be a great opportunity to get together outside of office hours whilst having a great time and also a wonderful opportunity to put something back into the community.

So, what’s on the calendar for the annual charity event for 2013? Our first event should be something well within our capabilities, it should be a warm-up to set the wheels turning, an event to get started on many more to come in the future.

Our own event will be taking place on Friday 10th of May, which is seperate to the other published event of May.

After many an idea thrown into the pot we drew up blank after blank. Then we had the Olympics… and among plenty of gold medals won by our British athletes, didn’t we do well in the canoeing? This is it we said and all in agreement too! But where do we canoe to and from?

Putting this into some sort of perspective let’s ask ourselves some key questions:

Q: What equipment do we have for such an event? A: None

Q: How many members of the PFL staff have even been in a canoe? A: Two

Q: What experience does any one member of Parkin’s have? A: Almost none

Q: What kind of skills can we put together between us? A: Some

Q: Any outward bound experience… of any kind? A: Well....

Q: Does any one of us have the physical or mental strength? A: Hmmmm....

Conclusion:Perfect! We have all the attributes we need for such an event. Without them it wouldn’t be a challenge would it!

The Event: The Great Glen Canoe Trail… 60 miles of busy canals, lochs, numerous portages and some serious open water! Oh yes and the deepest inland water in the British Isles… not to mention the elusive Nessy!!!

Yes indeed, May this year will be something to look forward to for all participating and all spectating. Join us along the way as we prepare ourselves in fitness, training, preparation, logistics and probably a 101 things we never thought of! Please support us by donating what you can to this year’s chosen charity -Lake District Calvert Trust.

About the charity

The Lake District Calvert Trust provides residential outdoor activity courses for people of all ages with physical, sensory, learning, behavioural and/or mental disabilities. Its mission is to challenge disability through outdoor adventure. Pioneering equipment adaptations, and intensive, instructor-led activity programmes (that include climbing, abseiling, canoeing, sailing, horse/trap driving, archery, orienteering and paragliding), provide an environment whose aims are to teach, challenge, motivate, engender confidence in ability, promote independence, and foster integration. All instructors are highly trained and specialist qualified, and the facilities are specially adapted and fully accessible to all. The Lake District Calvert Trust provides a unique and life-changing experience for those with disabilities, who are encouraged to believe that it’s what you CAN do that counts.
