My story

Patrick was born on 7th August 1987. He was an affectionate, gentle baby, content and happy, crossing every milestone in his own easygoing way.  Patrick graduated from Birmingham University last July with a 2:1 in politics.  After graduating  Patrick showed great strength of character and determination in securing a Sales Executive position with Toshiba in the City.  Since starting work, Patrick demonstrated a singlemindedness that would certainly have ensured a successful career had it had the chance to blossom; and which made us very proud of the young man that he had become.

Patrick had a short life, but a very full one, taking opportunities whenever they arose. He lived by his favourite motto, ‘carpe diem’ and he died doing what he loved best. We want everyone to remember Patrick as he lived, fun loving, larger than life, exuberant, the life and soul of every party, whilst also being fiercely loyal, fair minded, thoughtful and so endearing.

Patrick’s absence is much, much louder than his presence ever was, and I’m sure that everyone who knew him would agree that he was not the quietest person on the planet! He was a huge personality and was always busy; seeing friends, watching the football, going to the gym or enjoying a family meal with us. For these reasons and because he was living at home, everything that we do is affected by the fact that he is no longer with us.  Fortunately for us, we have many happy memories of our life with Patrick. Although he has left a massive gap in our lives, and we miss him desperately, we believe that the short time we had with Patrick was a very special gift that can never be taken away from us.

We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of Patrick’s friends and family who have already donated generously to two charities that were close to Patrick’s heart. The two charities were chosen because Patrick suffered from Iga Nephropathy, a mild form of kidney disease and donations to ‘South West Thames Kidney Fund’ will go directly to research into chronic renal disease. Alun was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer seven years ago and subsequently Patrick was an ardent supporter of 'Prostate UK'. He is still wearing his blue prostate charity band.

We would like to thank Peter Tootill the father of one of Patrick’s school friends who cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats in memory of Patrick, managing to raise more money for Patrick’s charities and we are very proud of his achievement.

On Monday 31st August, at Party 4 Patrick, many of Patrick's friends and family will be taking part in a 5km run (or walk!) together in memory of Patrick's life and to celebrate what would have been his 22nd Birthday earlier in the month. We want to thank each and every one of them for joining us, and for gathering further sponsorship.

On the 4th September Mike Dennis will be beginning a 3 day expedition with some of his colleagues in memory of his best friend Patrick.  They will be traveling from the North Coast of Somerset to the South Coast of Devon. The journey is over 100 miles long and includes a 26 mile cross-country run, a 10 mile kayak, a 10 mile run, a 35 mile mountain bike ride and a final 40 miles mountain bike ride. The expedition is part of a race against 25 other 6 man teams and will be a real test of physical and mental endurance. We wish Mike the best of luck and look forward to hearing about his expedition.

On Sunday 18th October, Paul Harker will take part in the Cabbage Patch 10 mile race in memory of Patrick, which starts and finishes in Twickenham. We wish him all the best and hope all goes well.

It would mean a lot to us if you could contribute in Patrick's memory to either or both of his charities. Our other charitable cause is

It is some comfort to us that some good has come out of our terrible loss, and we are so pleased that people’s generosity has allowed Patrick to make a difference.
