Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity. We’re striving for a cure, by revolutionising the way we treat, diagnose and prevent dementia.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I was diagnosed with Posterior Cortical Atrophy, a visual variant form of Alzheimer's, almost three years ago. I have always been a runner, purely for pleasure. Now I run with guide runners because of my visual processing difficulties. I am 56 years old, can no longer read and have difficulty processing distance, depth and speed, amongst other things! Running is a challenge these days, but I want to continue to run for as long as I am able. I rely upon family to get me out and about and friends to help me to continue to enjoy my hobbies; running, music and art.

PCA is one of many so called rare forms of young onset dementia that affect around 64,000 people in the UK alone. It is a progressive, neurological disease which affects skills such as reading, driving and seeing what and where things are. Difficulties with literacy, numeracy and the ability to make skilled movements are often the first symptoms noticed by individuals with PCA. Other symptoms include problems judging distance, depth and speed and the inability to cope with changes in light. Thinking skills and speech may also be affected, although initially memory is not affected.

I am raising money for research to help towards early diagnosis, support and towards deeper understanding of this life changing disease.
