On the 17 September I will be setting off on Alfred Wainwright’s classic route starting with one foot in the Irish Sea at St. Bees Head and ending with a paddle in the North Sea at Robin Hood’s Bay on Sunday 25 September.
I shall be walking through three national park’s and over some of the most rugged and beautiful terrain of the Lake District by way of the idyllic Lakeland valley’s of Borrowdale, Grasmere and Patterdale, passing Helvellyn and onto the gentler landscape of Kirby Stephen and the Yorkshire Dales before ascending onto the heather moorlands of the North York Moors and the dramatic cliffs of the North Sea coast and finally resting, hopefully with a pint of hand pulled bitter, at the pretty fishing village of Robin Hoods bay.
The route is a total of 194 miles and it is said that the walk should be completed over 14 days, however the life of a busy insurance broker means that I shall be attempting to complete the walk in 9 days, limiting my time away from the office to one week, thereby averaging over 21 miles per day.
To ensure that I am motivated to complete this challenge, I have nominated two charities who will share any money raised between them and all donations would be gratefully received. My nominated charity’s are:
1. Teesside Hospice www.teessidehospice.org
2. Middlesbrough & Teesside Philanthropic Foundation www.teessidecharity.org.uk
I shall be paying for all my own costs and every penny raised will be distributed equally between the two charity’s.
