I'll be taking part in the 'Do it for Charity' Superhero Run on Sunday 13 May to raise funds for the UCKG HelpCentre's refurbishment work on the Grade II listed building known as The National, in Kilburn.

The building is very close to my heart. I was involved in the acquisition process and I'm extremely proud of what the building has become for the local community, especially the youths. And, I'm excited about this refurbishment that will enhance the usability of the premises and secure the listed asset's future.

Currently there's an average 1,500 plus members of the community who use the building on a weekly basis to access a variety of services delivered free of charge by the UCKG HelpCentre staff and volunteers. These range from advice and guidance, to emotional and spiritual support in crisis situations, to motivational seminars, to one-on-one life coaching sessions to name a few.

A carefully designed calendar of activities ensures hundreds of youngsters engage in character building musicals and dramas, and other activities on a daily basis. Many have been able to overcome the scars of difficult childhoods and others have even gathered the strength to turn their backs on gang life and crime.

The building is nearing its 100 anniversary and was in need of major cosmetic and structural repairs. Adding to the repairs, listed features that were covered by previous uses will be unveiled once again and restored. And, in order to maximise usability, internal spaces are being redesigned providing better accommodation for all community focused activities. The first part of this project will cost in excess of £1m.

My fundraising target is £1,000 that I hope will help ensure this project is concluded and more young lives are empowered for a better futu
