Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

I and Wayne (my mate) went on holiday at Xmas and New Year as atreat for the hard year that had passed. This one particular day on 3rd Jan when we were as usual was both swimming enjoying the waves as they came, laughing with other people in the sea. Suddenly the worst possible thing happened. The current suddenly turned and whilst Wayne was originally about 10 yard from me turned into about 50, the current decided to sweep him away, (however, I was not aware of this until something alerted me by my name but it wasn't Wayne). I put my thumbs up to signal toWayneif he was ok, but he signed back no. I knew straight away there was something wrong, and whilst swimming over there I realised he was on the verge of drowning. Meanwhile there were other people clearly in trouble and shouting for help. I got hold of Wayne and pulled him up from virtually under the water, but then I went under (I then was worried) I had to think straight away of how I could get him out but also myself safely. I therefore told him to swim breast stroke and swim for himself and I am beside him.  We did for as few seconds but the current was very strong and you could feel the pull.  I then had to tell the guy I couldn't help him as my mate needed me 1st.  I told Wayne not to panic and to swim on his back and kick as hard as he could and make his way to shore but if this fails  ( the final task to help Wayne was to do the life saver move and make him lie on top of my chest, both on our backs with his head to one side and both of us kick but Wayne also use his arms but I hold his head steady so no slipping back in) he did and as soon as I felt the floor, I told him stop swimming and walk, I shoved him further to shore to make sure he was ok. Then I turned around and saw a guy with his mate in more trouble, him and his mate were shouting help, help. I thought for what was about 3 seconds about them poor people in Portugal and my own safety but then about what if the guy goes under, then The final thought was he is with his mate and 2 guys helping are better than one. I went back in and saved the other guy  by telling his mate to grab his one arms and I on the other arm and together we will swim. As soon as I could feel the floor I said for all of us to stand then drag him to safety. We all did just that and we together literally fog marched him to the sand. (HOW BL***Y DRAMATIC EH)?  The current was unbelievably strong and I was seriously worried that we wouldn't get out alive. I had a basic life savers course 11 years ago and I only attended for 3-4 weeks, however, the small parts he taught me came back to me straight away. I do feel if he hadn't of taught me them small bits, neither, I, my mate and the other guy I pulled out would be here today!
