On Sunday, 26 April 2009 I will be staggering around the streets of London running the Marathon and raising money for the Scientific Exploration Society, a UK-based charity which undertakes a worldwide programme of expeditions focusing on scientific, conservation, education and community aid projects.
The money I raise for the SES will be used for community aid and education projects on its forthcoming expeditions, including an expedition to a remote area in the Beni region of Bolivia in 2009. The region suffers from extreme flooding each year and can only be reached by air and boat during the rainy season. The SES is seeking to raise £8,000 to have an ambulance boat built to transport the sick and injured to hospital. Some of the funds raised will also be used for medical aid, education and dental drugs. Further details on the SES and its projects can be found at www.ses-explore.org.
