Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I’ll be making a real splash for Rethink Mental Illness in October 2012 when I will attempt to cycle on the River Thames - pedalling 142 miles in six days starting at Lechlade, Glos, on 5th October and finishing in London on World Mental Health Day on the 10th October
The reason I am doing this challenge is to highlight the plight of people with severe mental illness and, of course, raise much needed funds for the charity "Rethink Mental Illness".
1 in 4 people will be treated for mental illness at some time in thier lives and 1 in 100 will develop schizophrenia - a dreadful incurable disease striking young people, like my son, in thier prime.
With out proper help and support many people with schizophrenia end up homeless, in prison -1 in 10 will die from suicde. The impact of this illness on loving families can be devistating, as we discovered for ourselves. However, with the right level of care and support most people with schizophrenia can manage thier condition and live fulfiling lives.
Rethink Mental illness is one of the few charities that provides support to families and campaigns on their behalf. That is why I am raising funds for this outstanding organisation.
Lastly, I would like to give special thanks to David Witt and the former students of Oxford University who built "Skippy" the specially designed "pedal - boat".
