Pendle Leisure Trust staff are busy fund-raising to help save the life of a former colleague’s four-year-old son.

Little Sam Shaw is fighting Neuroblastoma – an aggressive childhood cancer. To give him the best chance of beating the disease, he needs clinical treatment in America - but it comes at a cost!

His mum, Christine, worked in the Admin department at Pendle Leisure Trust’s head office in Colne, so when her former colleagues heard the devastating news, they desperately wanted to help.

Some leisure staff didn’t know Christine personally, but putting themselves in her shoes – and a lot of them being parents themselves – they want to do their bit.

For the last few weeks, individuals at the Trust’s head office at ColneTown Hall have been baking cakes and cooking curries. Other staff at the leisure centres have been taking part in sponsored events and challenges and there are still lots of fund-raising events planned, including a charity concert, family pool inflatable fun day and a treasure hunt.

Pendle Leisure Trust’s Human Resources Manager, Vanessa Kelly, said: “Christine was a popular member of staff and we really felt for her and little Sam when we heard the news. There was no hesitation, we wanted to do something and the rest of the staff were right behind us.

“It is an ambitious target, but every bit helps and if we can do our bit to get Sam to America, we will!”

In total, Sam needs £250,000 to pay for the treatment and associated costs. The therapy he needs is not available in the UK and will not be funded by the NHS.

Christine said: “All we want is for Sam to be given the opportunity to beat this terrible disease and have the best chance of survival.

“We are asking everyone to give him a chance of life by helping us to raise the money needed to get Sam to America by early Summer. I’m pleading with everyone to do whatever they can to give our little boy the chance to grow up.”

Anyone wanting to help Sam please donate on this page or you can buy a wristband, costing just £2, from all of Pendle Leisure Trust’s facilities in Nelson, Colne and Barnoldswick.
