My story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page for Save the Children. Please dig deep and sponsor us online.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Save the Children will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

We have already raised a significant amount through fundraising events and corporate sponsors but we want to raise much more than the £1000 target for the charities. So please sponsor us now!

What are we doing?

Pete Stockall and Mike Mogford have decided to undertake a truly epic trans-continental adventure in the name of charity this summer. On the 30th July they will set off with 40 other teams on the last great adventure on earth, the 'Mongol Rally'! 9000 miles, 2 deserts, 5 mountain ranges, roads ranging from bad to non-existent, no support crew and all this in a car that was swapped for a bag of crisps. The Mongol Rally pits the worst of the world of motoring against some of the worst terrain on earth. The challenge is to drive a car with an engine smaller than one litre, from the east end of London to the east end of the world: Ulan Bator, Mongolia. Pete and Mike (or Two Men Went to Mowgolia) have opted for 'Daisy' a trusty 1988 Citroen 2CV which pumps out a maximum of 602cc, 0-60 in 26 seconds. The route will pass through 11 countries, France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, back into Kazakhstan, Russia and then Mongolia. In order to finish in around 3 weeks, the teams will be sleeping in their cars and driving pretty much non-stop. The Mongol Rally is a charity event with each team raising at least £1000. 40% of the charity money will be donated to 'Save the Children'. We will be donating specifically to their Mongolian projects. A third of Mongolian children live in poverty, exacerbated by the country's harsh winters. The first two years of this century have seen some of the harshest winters on record following on from very dry summers - over two million livestock died, farming was devastated and homeless people's lives were threatened. Many homeless children find accommodation in several shelters supported by Save the Children. In the capital, Ulaanbaator, STC run a drop-in service centre that offers children a hot meal, clean clothing and washing facilities. In Mongolia's harsh economic climate, a growing number of children are finding themselves homeless, or are having to work for a living. As a result, they face greater exposure to illness and injury. They often risk injury from dangerous work, poor living conditions and gang violence. Children are also exposed to sexually transmitted diseases - especially girls working in the sex industry. Save the Children UK is helping to tackle these problems by teaching vulnerable children how to protect themselves and get help if they become ill. The age 3 to 7 years old is a critical period in a child's educational and social development. As primary school in Mongolia only starts at the age of 8, preschool education is vital. Only a third of Mongolian children currently have access to preschool education. Save the Children UK has established new kindergartens for areas where children have been excluded from education. There are many other projects run by Save the Children in Mongolia have a look at their website for a bit more info, www.savethechildren.org.uk - the Uk website www.savethechildren.mn - the Mongolia website There will be the opportunity for interested rally teams to visit the projects when we are in Mongolia to see where some of the hard work has gone. The remaining 60% of the money raised will be donated to 'Send a Cow', an innovative organisation based in Bath that combats poverty in Africa by supplying poor rural communities with livestock, training and advice to help them become more self-reliant. The gift of livestock combats malnutrition by providing valuable food sources, such as milk and eggs, as well as increasing the amount of fresh vegetables available through the use of manure on the land. Surplus supplies can be sold to help generate an income that can be invested to secure a better future, such as sending children to school. A separate justgiving account is set up to donate to Send a Cow http://www.justgiving.com/peteandmikesendacow The Rally is also working with the Mongolian Embassy to find a beneficial use for the rally cars that make it to Mongolia. More details of the rally can be found at www.mongolrally.co.uk.
