BUPA Great North Run 2009 · 20 September 2009 ·

This fund is been set up in memory of Dr Fiona Dolan, formerly specialist registrar in Ophthalmology, Glasgow who died, aged 36. It funds a cause close to Fiona's heart - enabling Ophthalmology colleagues to perform cataract operations and restore sight to people of all ages in developing countries.

Story

I ran the Great North Run in Newcastle on 20 September 2009 both to remember Fiona, who was a remarkable person, and to support the genuinely life changing work (eye operations in developing countries - Fiona was an eye doctor) done by the fund which her husband Steven set up in her memory.

I also ran the Glasgow half marathon on  6 September - entering this seemed a good idea at the time, but not so clever in hindsight ... so in effect I've run a whole marathon (with a lengthy rest at the halfway point!) to support the fund.

I finished the Newcastle run in 1.50.07, and the Glasgow run in 1.47.48. So I'm slowing down - but it was hotter in Newcastle ... and I was that bit older. Compared to the field, I actually did better in the Great North Run : 5,821 out of 37,520 finishers (top 15%), compared to 2,223 from 7,760 in Glasgow (top 30%).

Please give as much as you can - this is a relatively small charity, but one which really impacts on people's lives in developing countries.
