Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. In the next 12 months I am aiming to raise at least £25,000 for Cancer Research. I intend to do this through a series of events, which collectively amount to downright lunacy. Events include:
500ft abseil down Guy's Hospital Tower (18th May 2008 - joined by Simon Appell, Alastair Beveridge, Jo Wright and Paul Mather!)
The Edinburgh Marathon (May 2008)
The Exmoor – Dartmoor 100 mile cycle (June 2008)
The London Triathlon (August 2008)
London - Run To The Beat (October 2008)
The Marathon des Sables (March 2009) – see below
My fundraising year will culminate in The Marathon des Sables, the legendary race across the Sahara. Known as the world’s hardest footrace, it covers 151 miles (in sections of 16, 21, 24, 50, 26, and 14 miles) run over 6 days - equivalent to 6 regular marathons in 6 days. In addition to that, competitors have to carry everything they will need for the duration (apart from a tent) on their backs in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag etc). Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint (if your map reading is good enough to find it!). Competititors also have to prepare all their own food throughout the race and will experience mid-day temperatures of up to 120°F.

Physical fitness is important but the mental stress endured is immense - mental stamina probably constitutes at least 50% of whether the distance will be completed.

All of this of course pales into insignificance when compared to the stress and trauma experienced by cancer sufferers and their families – I hope you are able to sponsor me in what I think you’ll agree is a very worthwhile cause.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Yorkshire Cancer Research will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
Many thanks for your support,
Pete
