BUPA Great North Run 2009 · 20 September 2009 ·

Saint Michael’s is the local hospice care charity ensuring people affected by terminal illness can access high quality, personalised care. We help thousands of local people each year and make no charge. Each year we must raise £7 million to provide our range of services.

Story

UPDATE

Completed the Great North Run on 20th September in 1 hour and 52 minutes. Really pleased with the time and the support I received as I ran round the route from the spectators. I have also received incredible support from family and friends. Thank You.

To JustGiving and my own very special children, thank you for drawing pictures of me as the Hulk at the Great North Sports and Fitness Expo on the Saturday and for judging them winners of the competition.

To Dad (Robert) running in your memory, it was a fantastic day and we are all sure you would have appreciated the effort from the family.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

This year I am running in aid of St Michaels Hospice in Harrogate. In January of this year my father-in-law passed away after suffering with histiocytosis-X. During the previous 2 years, and at the time my mother-in-law was also ill being treated for Acute Myloid Leukaemia, my father-in-law attended the day therapy unit at St Michaels. This allowed members of our family respite whilst my father-in-law attended St Michaels for the day.

The hospice provided care for my father-in-law and respite for the entire family. After my father-in-law passed away the hospice provided further support to help members of the family deal with their grief. Especially my 8 year old daughter who they provided books and time to talk, making a difference that we as parents found hard to explain as we dealt with our own grief.

As you can see we have seen first hand what a difference St Michaels can make to a family and understand that the hospice has very high running costs. In order to provide more well needed funding for the hospice and in memory of my father-in-law (Robert McAlpine) I am raising funds for St Michaels Hospice. As I have my own entry in the Great North Run this year (organised charity places in previous years) and I can raise funds for the hospice and raise money that will go to the Hospice allowing them to continue to provide this support to other families in similar situations.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

I know that the current world financial situation is not good but I would still encourage you to please dig deep and donate to this worth cause now.

Many thanks

Phil
