On 21st of April 1998, my father died of Leukemia. He was diagnosed in November of the previous year. I always said I'd do something to try and raise money to go directly to combat this, but as with everything, I never quite get around to things...

During this six month period, he was given various amounts of blood from donors to boost his immune system. I started to give blood to kind of repay what he had received (somewhere around 25-30 pints that we knew of). I have seen first hand what someone who receives a pint of blood looks like, before and after and believe me, it's like recharging a set of batteries. I highly recommend giving blood to everyone, it's painless and somebody, somewhere, really appreciates this simple, yet highly effective, gift.

Now, being from the North East, I know what a big event the Great North Run is. Some years ago, I promised myself that I would run it before I was 30, which incidently is next year. I may have been drunk at the time, but, unfortunately, I DO remember promising to do it (see picture on left). Dave, the person over my shoulder, had also had a few. He decided to run as well!!!

I have chosen to run for the Leukaemia Research Fund who are the only national UK charity devoted exclusively to improving treatments, finding cures and investigating the causes and prevention of cancers of the blood and related conditions, in children and adults. This includes 30 Specialist Programmes to develop key areas of research such as bone marrow transplantation and treating children with leukaemia. As a registered charity, they rely on the dedicated support of more than 200 voluntary fundraising Branches and thousands of other people from all walks of life who contribute their time and money to make this work possible.

I see the Great North Run as a great challenge and I expect to experience quite a bit of pain. But I know it will be worth all the effort when I get to the finishing line. I do not have a target time for the race, only that I finish in the same day as I start it (might be pushing it a bit, I know, but I'll have a go).

I would therefore like to ask that you consider sponsoring me for this event and thank you for reading my story. Please sponsor me online. It's the most efficient way for me to raise funds for my charity. If you are a UK taxpayer your donation will be increased by almost a third at no cost to you. Both myself and the Leukaemia Research Fund really appreciate your donation. Any amount will make a difference.

Many thanks.
