Nepal Trek & Volunteering · 1 August 2010

Moving Mountains is a progressive charity with over 20 years experience, run by teams who are highly experienced in the development sector. We fund social welfare, educational and health projects in Nepal and East Africa, where we have set up our own NGOs.

Story

Why am I raising money?

In August 2010 I will be travelling to Nepal with a group from Bristol University RAG to work as a volunteer in a remote village in the foothills of the Himalayas, through the charity Moving Mountains (www.movingmountains.org.uk).  I will be living with a Sherpa family and during our stay my group will be taking significant steps to complete a Running Water project, bringing running water to the houses of these poor families for the first time ever.  We will also be teaching and running a dental and primary health clinic.

Who am I raising the money for?

Moving Mountains has been heavily involved in improving the lives of Sherpa families by providing them with electricity, basic health care, education support and setting up businesses for the local people to run.  Their work is truly remarkable and like no other that I have seen before.

A hydroelectric power station has been built in the area with the support of Moving Mountains. This has meant that cooking the daily meal does not fill their houses with smoke, and children are no longer at risk from respiratory problems which used to prevent them from going to school.

Your donation will be mostly going towards the funding of the running water project and a part also towards paying for teachers in the village schools.

The money that you donate on JustGiving (www.justgiving.com/philmarke) will be going directly to the charity and not paying for my expenses.  I have been involved in other fundraising events throughout the year with my group to raise the money to cover my expenses and reach my £2,250 target.

Why should you sponsor me?

In order to encourage you to support me personally, before going to Nepal I will be partaking in the following event for which I would seek your sponsorship.

Bristol to London Cycle ride: June 2010: With the support of my cousin, Charlie Pearson, we will be cycling the 130 miles over 2 days.  It will be an arduous ride albeit through some beautiful countryside.
