London to Belgium Cycle · 1 September 2015

In partnership with local Zambians we are helping to build and develop community schools in the Copperbelt region for children, mainly orphans, who cannot otherwise afford to go to school. We build classrooms, employ teachers, cooks and a nurse, and our hope is that communities will be transformed.

Story

After the personal challenge of cycling from Rome to Nimes, I thought I would be bike-fit to support Claire and Stu in their warm up ride for their 'Beyond the Bike' cycle. The summer holidays might have got in the way of some training, but I'm still keen to raise money for an important cause:

Beyond Ourselves partners with three Community Primary Schools (from Nursery up to Grade 7) in the Copperbelt Province in Zambia. Each year 10 students from the graduating Grade 7 classes at all three schools are selected to receive a bursary fund which enables them to continue their education into Grade 8 and beyond. These students are academically able but their families lack the finance to continue investing in their education.  To have the opportunity to attend and complete High School is life changing. To enable one student to continue in High School for one year costs just £92, that's £460 to complete Grades 8-12.
