At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fund raising page and for helping me in my quest to help those who suffer from Alzheimer's.

Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

Want to know why?

My mum has Alzheimer's, she was diagnosed around four years ago has now gone into the third and final stage of the disease, which currently has no cure.

My mum was the strongest, independent, loving and well put together woman I know, she was fun loving and was the mother who could be found skipping with the kids on the street, feeding the neighbours children and holding the yearly Christmas party (home made crisps and all!!)  After the death of my father she was left to single handedly raise six children on her own. She did a grand job and has continuously worked to provide for her children and grandchildren and spent her life work caring for others, especially the elderly. Her retirement was supposed to be the time that she got to enjoy for herself, visit Malta the place she had always wanted to visit and simply be. However, this disease doesn't afford her that much deserved privilege.

What is Alzheimer's?

Alzheimer's is a form of dementia, a debilitating disease which affects the brain causing memory loss, confusion, loss of judgement, wandering, hallucinations, mistrust, personality changes, disorientation and language problems and violent mood swings as well as considerable weight loss. It also has a knock on effect on everyone around the sufferer and is known as the "carers disease" as those caringfor the suffer bare the brunt of the changes in behaviour and personality.  It's not easy when your mum looks you in your face and doesn't know who you are.

How can I help?

So I, Madeline McQueen, who has never liked running at all decided to run 5Km (3 Miles) on 3rd Sept 2006 and  raised £365.00. Three years later and I am doing it again on 6th September 2009 to try and raise the rest of the  £2000 to help make a difference. In 2005 I walked 60K (36 Miles) for Breast Cancer, this year I'm running for my Mum. It is the least that I can do to help those who suffer with such a soul destroying disease and you can help to.  Alzheimer's is no respecter of persons we all have a chance of getting it. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Alzheimer's Society will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.
