At Young Lives vs Cancer, we help families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. But every day 12 more children and young people hear the devastating news they have cancer. We’ll face it all together – but we can’t do it without you. Visit www.younglivesvscancer.org.uk

Story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.  The official launch date for the 8 week slimathon is 1st July 2009.  Why though should you sponsor us for simply losing weight?  Our healthier living could really help to change the lifestyle of many families.  Ask any parent what  their main ambition for their child is, the answer is simple. To live a healthy and happy life.  However, every day 10 families are told their child has cancer.

This is a true story and inspiration behind our slimathon.

Arwen first fell ill on the 10th June 2008. This initially started with vomiting in the early hours of the morning but by the following lunchtime we knew it was something more serious than a sickness bug as she was vomiting was blood.  Arwen's left pupil had dilated, was fixed and unresponsive to light. A CT scan showed a mass sitting behind the left eye which we later found out at Great Ormond Street was a brain tumour. Arwen  had emergency surgery the following day to remove the tumour. She stayed in intensive care for 3 days then a neuro ward for a further 6 days. She then had radiotherapy for 30 sessions with joint chemotherapy over the end of July, August and the beginning of September. She then had a couple of months of treatment and started back on the chemotherapy in November which she will continue till October 2009.

Arwen is a bright happy child who always puts others first. Even when having radiotherapy she was most concerned how her little brother was doing as she'd never really been apart from him for long before. Now a year on she is at school full time and loves girlie pink things and singing and dancing.

To us she has been a real little fighter and hardly ever complained and we are so proud of her for being so strong and getting through so much when she is only 4 years old (3 years at time of diagnosis).

As the UK's leading children's cancer charity, CLIC Sargent is the only organisation to offer them all round care and support. That’s because we’re there every step of the way:

During treatment – providing specialist nurses, doctors, play specialists, Homes from Home

In hospital & at home – offering specialist social care and family support in the community – specialist youth services, holidays, grants, helpline

After treatment – helping survivors, supporting those bereaved, research

We set up this slimathon, to give something back to Clic Sargent as a thank you for being there for Arwen and her family and so that other families can continue to have the help and support that is vital during such distressing times.  We REALLY need your help in raising funds,  whilst it may seem realtively simple tosimply lose weught the real issue is to raise money and awareness of this chairty.

Thank you so much for any money you can donate, we really do mean it as we know how appreciated the money will be and what good use it will be put to.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: CLIC Sargent gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
