Ampleforth Abbey is home to a community of Benedictine monks who welcome visitors into the Abbey for services, and to explore the extensive and stunning Abbey grounds. History & Heritage The Abbey Church and Visitor Centre offer a fascinating insight into a living monastic community. Founded in 1802, the Benedictine community at Ampleforth Abbey is the largest community of monks in the UK. The Abbey Church is filled with furniture, sculpture, and glass from skilled crafts people, including local oak craftsman Robert ‘Mousey’ Thompson. Retreats Our comfortable retreat facilities offer space to rest, reflect and relax away from the routine of everyday life. This place of prayer offers spiritual nourishment for those who seek it. All are warmly welcomed, whether part of a group, for a conference or your own personal retreat. Tea Room Home-made refreshments are available including hot meals and cakes, tea, coffee, and cold drinks including our Ampleforth Abbey apple juice and cider. Outside seating offers stunning views across the Ampleforth valley, and there is baby changing, children’s menu, and plenty of space to park buggies. Explore the Grounds The Ampleforth estate covers 1,200 acres of lakes and woodland in the Howardian Hills National Landscape, with the North York Moors National Park to the north. We welcome walkers and cyclists throughout the year.

Story

Thanks for visiting our fundraising page!

In our project 'Poverty for Poverty', we are trying to witness and share in the suffering of those forced to live in poverty. Between the 1st and 5th of December, we are living outside in a tent on our school campus, where we eat, sleep and probably be very cold. However, we are continuing our normal school lives, including going to lessons, doing our home work and participating in all our extra curricular activities. We are also surviving on basic foods which we shall be cooking ourselves whilst eating only two main meals a day. As well as raising money for our school charity Face-Faw, we hope that our experience might give us even just a small insight into the lives of those suffering in poverty in our world.

Any donations you give will go to Face-Faw, our school charity at Ampleforth. Our primary aim will be to help Face-Faw support the work of the Ampleforth monastic community in Zimbabwe. The monastic community of Christ the Word does much work to aid the poor and destitute of Zimbabwe.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us and help Face-Faw.  The funds will be transferred to Ampleforth Abbey and through them directed to Face-Faw.  Face-Faw gets your money fast and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor us now!

News Update - 21st November - Due to initial overwhelming generosity of donations we have decided to be audacious and raise our fundraising target to £4,000!! Thanks to all who have donated so far!

News Update 2 - 1st December - D-Day! The camping starts today in the snow and rain. We slept in the tent last night and it's extremely cold but still stands, for now... Keep the donations coming in and thanks again to all who have donated so far!

News Update no. 3 - 2nd December - Made porridge in the snow this morning, which was fun. Hope this gets us the sympathy vote. Thanks for all the donations so far!

News Update no. 4 - 4th December - We woke up to blizzards and heavy snowfall this morning. Unfortunately, by mid-morning this had got the better of us and the tent, with the top end collapsing under four inches of snow. This has forced us to end our poverty fundraiser a little earlier than planned. Of course, we are very disappointed but we are still happy to have completed four nights in the tent (our first night was the 30th). All in all it has been a trying few days but it has made us realise just how fortunate we are. Thank you once again for the amazing generosity of all your donations! (No refunds )
