Powell Dobson Urbanists have entered a relay team into this year’s ’70 Wild Miles’ Challenge to help raise money for TENOVUS Cancer research. Set up in 1943, Tenovus is a leading cancer charity that invests around £3.9 million each year in pioneering cancer research, education and patient care. Tenovus also funds a Freephone Cancer Helpline (0808 808 1010), providing support to cancer patients and their families.

The Challenge will take place at Bala, North Wales on the 4 July 2009 and, as the name suggests, covers a distance of 70 miles. James Brown will kick off Powell Dobsons relay with a cycle ride of 47 miles. The challenge organisers  have described the route of this ride as ‘not for the feint hearted’ with long, steep clibms and sheer drops off the side of mountains.  James is really looking forward to it! On James’ return (hopefully in one piece!), Chris Gentle will take up the challenge of the next leg by canoeing 10 miles on Bala Lake. Whilst obviously flat, the lake is extremely windswept and can, with a good wind, resemble an angry sea. Needless to say, Chris is hoping for good weather. Should Chris return, both him and James will retire to the pub leaving Anthony Friis to take up the third and final relay leg, a 13 mile (half marathon) run along a route that can only be described as downright evil! Anthony is sacrificing a lot to undertake this event as he is likely to be running during the last game of the Lions tour, a fact that he is not happy about and points out at every available opportunity. Hence Chris and James’ visit to the pub. Not because of the lure of beer, crisps and pork scratchings but to watch the match in order to kindly and unselfishly report back to Anthony. Now that’s team spirit!

The Powell Dobson Urbanists team would like to thank all those who have, through sponsorship, helped to support Tenovus. A particular thanks goes out to Dagger Europe, a canoe manufacturer based in Clevedon (http://www.daggereurope.com/)  who have kindly lent Chris a suitable canoe for some much needed training and to use during the challenge.
