Story

Welcome to my fundraising page for RBS Project Africa

In June 2008, I am lucky enough to be travelling with 40 of my RBS colleagues to Malawi where we will be working in partnership with Quest4Change to build a clinic with the local community.

Background - We wanted an opportunity to work on a long term project, so we could learn more about the problems faced by rural African communities and work alongside the local people towards a common goal. We approached Quest4Change in August 2007 to help us source a project based in Africa that would benefit local communities in a sustainable and long-term way - and Project Africa was born!

Why Malawi? - 75% of the population in Malawi live in rural areas and of these only 29% of the population have access to health services. Life expectancy in 1995 was 45. It has now fallen to 37. Infant mortality is the 15th highest in the world - 183 children under five in every 1000 will die. In Malawi an estimated 400,000 children have been orphaned.

What are we going to do? - Working with the Joshua Orphan Care Trust based just outside of Blantyre in the South of Malawi, we will be working alongside villagers to construct a new health clinic. Health workers provided by the District Health Office will then be able to visit and provide regular healthcare for over 1,000 local people in the Pen Sulo district.

Employment is not taken away from local labourers, instead we will work alongside members of the community who are also giving up their time for free to help complete the work. Several skilled African labourers are also employed to ensure the project is completed to a high standard.

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

Your donation will support the long term goals of the project. The communities don't just disappear when the expedition ends and that is why Quest4Change support the project with funding beyond the month-long project.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Quest Overseas Charitable Trust will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

A BIG Thank You for your support.
