Story
In March 2012, I will be climbing to the peak of Mount Teide on the island of Tenerife, for the Atlantic Whale Foundation (AWF).
The 6 to 7 hour ascent begins late at night with the intention of reaching the summit at 3718m (12,198ft) by sunrise. Although the volcano hasn’t erupted since 1909, it is still considered active. Vents near the summit spew out sulphur dioxide gas and this, coupled with 40% less air pressure at 12000ft compared to sea level, makes Teide a challenging climb.
The AWF is a non-profit, volunteer-based charity whose projects include humanitarian efforts in Sierra Leone in areas such as education, construction/renovation and work in the community following recent civil war, as well as whale/dolphin conservation and dog rescue centres in Tenerife. New bases for humanitarian, environmental and conservation projects are currently being established in Ghana, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and South America.
Donating through JustGiving is perfectly safe and funds raised go straight to the charity!
Thank you,
Paul Taylor
