The phone rang.

"Hello my woman, it's Nanna." she said in that familiar Norfolk lilt.

She was calling for Mum, having got the news we'd all been hoping for. Papworth Hospital had a heart for her and she was heading there now.

Devastatingly, it was not the miracle we had longed for. That heart never started beating and we had to say goodbye in a bleak intensive care ward less than a week later.

Even at her poorliest, my grandmother had an amazing zest for life. She was more than Nanna; she was my pal, my partner in crime - my 'whack-a-mole' buddy at Hemsby arcade.

I was just 11 when she died. I can still remember sitting in the drab family room at the end of the hall when Mum and Dad came to tell me she'd gone.

Despite her premature departure, my nan was one of the lucky ones. She had a chance of life many die waiting for. It's for this reason I've decided to dedicate my 27-race challenge to her memory, and raise money for the British Heart Foundation; a charity that works hard every day to keep the nation's hearts beating.
