Epilepsy Action is creating a world without limits for everyone affected by epilepsy, connecting people with others, and providing support and information you can trust. We’re calling out the misunderstanding, prejudice and barriers that stop people with epilepsy living their best life.

Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page..

On 29th March 2009 I will be taking part in the Marathon des Sables, 'the toughest footrace on Earth' and raising money for Epilepsy Action.   My youngest daughter was born in August 2003.  She started having  seizures in December 2004 and was eventually diagnosed with epilepsy in February 2007.    She's had a tough time over the last couple of years but thankfully, because of the medication she now takes, is much more stable.   In the grand scheme of things, she's very lucky.  I am, however, acutely aware that many other people are not so fortunate.  This is why I want to raise money for Epilepsy Action.

The Marathon des Sables covers 243km/151 miles (in sections similar to 25, 34, 38, 82, 42, 22 km) run over 6 days (7 for some) - equivalent to 5 1/2 regular marathons. That's a speed of between 3 and 14 km an hour for competitors aged between 16 and 78.   I have to carry everything I will need for the duration (apart from a tent) on my back in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag etc). Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint.

I will have to prepare all my own food throughout the race.   Temperatures can reach 120°F, and I will be running or walking on uneven rocky, stony ground as well as 15 - 20% of the distance being through sand dunes.

Being physically fit is important but mental stamina could decide whether I complete the distance or not.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Epilepsy Action gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor me now!    Any amount is greatly appreciated!!!
