Fairbridge- Nike+ Human Race 2008 · 31 August 2008 ·

We fund research into potential treatments and cures for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a devastating genetic muscle-wasting disease that leads to paralysis, heart and lung failure and early death for all sufferers. We get involved to make a difference for all Duchenne sufferers. Help us find a cure.

Story

On 31st August I am running the Nike+ 10k Human Race for the GM Trust.

The GM Trust was established when Gavriel, a 5 year old boy, was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. DMD is a degenerative and as yet, incurable muscle wasting disease. which boasts a tragic 100% fatality rate. The objective of the trust is to promote research into the treatment, cure, care and welfare of those people suffering from DMD. Funding is urgently required in order to increase the speed and quantity of research currently being undertaken.

-Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive & fatal muscle-wasting disease.
-It occurs in 1 in every 3500 male births.
-100 children a year are born in the UK with DMD.
-It is the biggest genetic killer in the UK.
-It is caused by a lack of dystrophin in the muscle, which would otherwise hold the muscles together.
-By age 11 most boys are confined to a wheelchair.
-Average life expectancy, even for boys treated for DMD is mid/late 20s.
-There is no cure at present
