RAF Marathon des Sables 2009

Welcome to the world of lunatics and masochists and in particular seven such lunatics, the RAF MDS Team 2009.

In March 2009, five serving RAF Personnel will be competing in the infamous ‘Marathon des Sables’. They and several hundred fellow ‘athletes’ will have to cross almost 250 kms of the Sahara desert over the course of one week, that’s equivalent to 5 ½ marathons and not only that, they will have to carry their own food and water, whilst mapping their way across the sand dunes and wadis in 45 degrees of heat.

So why Help For Heroes?

Because it’s for our men and women, wounded heroes serving our country on Operations. It’s for Derri, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it for Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. It’s for Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could say goodbye to his wife. It is for all of us because one day, we could be the Derri, the Carl or the Richard.

Bryn Parry-Appeal Chairman
“Help for Heroes was launched on 1st October 2007. We wanted to do something practical for the men and women of our Armed Forces who are wounded while serving in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. We asked the Chief of the General Staff for a task and we were told that we could best help by raising money to provide a much needed swimming pool and gym complex at Headley Court.”
