Imagine if you can a number of cysts on your internal organs. Some of these cysts can be up to 15 cm in diameter. There are so many of them that they can make you look pregnant or overweight because they have moved the internal organs slightly out of place.

My wife does not need to imagine what this is like because she has polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and, just for fun, there are also cysts on her ovaries. Eventually her kidneys will stop working and so she will need dialysis or a donor kidney. There is no known cure for PKD.
She has already spent over a week in hospital having one of the cysts drained but there is no guarantee that it will not return and due to the number of cysts and their location the risk of open surgery is too high.  We were lucky to have our daughter when we did but there is a 50% chance she too will have PKD.
